Cancer is a term used for a class of diseases in which a group of abnormal cells divide without control, cause invasion of adjacent tissues, and sometimes spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph. It is these properties of cancers that differentiate them from benign tumors. Most cancers form a tumor, but some do not. Leukemia is one of the cancers that does not form a tumor.
There are more than 100 different types of cancer and thus it is important to remember that cancer is many diseases, not just one. The branch of medicine that studies, diagnosis, treats, and prevents cancer is called oncology. All cancers start in cells where they grow and divide, producing more cancerous cells. This division and production of cells occurs because cells become old or damaged and are replaced with new cells. Growth and division of cells keeps the body health. Sometimes, this process goes wrong and a cell becomes damaged or changed, causing mutation in other cells as they grow and divide. These mutated cells do not die as they should, producing extra cells that may form a mass of tissue called a tumor. Mutation, also known as abnormality in the genetic material of a cell, are frequently believed to be effects of carcinogens (agents that are directly involved in cancer exacerbation). Examples of such carcinogens are: tobacco smoke, chemicals, radiation, etc. When dealing with cancer, life should not be a financial decision. Sadly, for many it is and that’s why we are here to assist. |
